The
bulls produced by Mound Creek Ranch and our Genetic Partners are
designed to add pounds to your calf crop, a shorter time in the
feedlot, premiums on the rail, higher valued replacement females,
and overall more total dollars to your bottomline!
We firmly believe our future will dictate producing more product on
less….less land, less feed per pound of gain, less fuel, less labor,
and less dollars tied up. Premiums will be given for a quality
product and average will not even pay for the annual cost of
production. Our bulls are genetically engineered to do more. They
are designed to win the battle for dollars. We still believe pounds
are important, replacement females are the lifeblood of our breed,
and that we can compete with any breed for premium dollars both in
the yard and on the rail. Period!
The evolution of the bulls we annually sell in “The Cowman’s Kind”
Brangus Bull Sale started about 18 months prior to sale date when
these calves started hitting the ground at birth. On the other hand
it really began about nine to ten months prior to calving when
breeding decisions were made in our effort to genetically design a
better group of beef bulls. Come to think of it, this process really
started years and years ago when we designed and produced their
sires, dams and grand dams. Point we are making is that we are
constantly looking into that “crystal ball” and understand we have
to look many years into the future in an effort to always stay a
step ahead of the pack in genetic design. At mating time each year
we strive to raise the bar in our effort to design genetic resources
intended to increase our bull buyer’s ability to create profit for
future calf crops while always addressing an ever-changing industry.
The bulls we raise represent the leading edge of economic breeding
value and have more thought in their genetic design than any group
of bulls you can find. Each have been evaluated, scrutinized and
culled harder than any in the country. You will find the bulls we
raise for “The Cowman’s Kind” to be stout, rugged, durable, fertile,
sound, and backed by hard facts. Facts that indicate their value for
convenience, growth, maternal traits and carcass merit. Facts that
will mean more dollars returned for each calf crop born. Don’t take
our word, ask around, come take a look, or give us a call. Like we
guarantee our bulls, we guarantee you will like our product.
More Pounds
More Dollars
The Cowman’s Kind
The
Mound Creek Bull Program is the most demanding development program
in the country. Period. Our goal is to demand the most from our
genetic design and develop the best beef bulls in the country.
Period. The final product from our development program is a
fault-free group of ranch ready bulls genetically designed to stand
the trials and rigors of their new life in any production program in
any environment.
Birth to Weaning
Within 12 hours of birth each calf is documented for date of birth,
birth weight, leg length, assigned a hair color code, tagged with
sire and dam information, and noted for sex. Three to four months
later all calves are started on creep feed and administered
vaccinations for clostridial, viral complex, pasturella, vitamins,
minerals, and de-wormed. Just prior to weaning all calves are given
boosters for the disease related vaccinations and de-wormed once
again. Immediately after the calves are split from their mothers at
weaning we individually weigh each calf while confirming sex, scurs
and color codes.
Yearling Gain Test
All weaned calves are dried out on medicated receiving feed for two
weeks. We warm up the weaned calves for about two weeks on their
intended gain test feed and then weigh all bull calves on gain test.
Gain test feed is designed to achieve about 3.25 lbs. daily gain.
The bulls are gain tested in 25 to 30 acres pastures which is
considerably more pasture space than most other bull development
programs provide their gain test bulls. These bigger gain test
pastures insure the bulls will exercise and forage at will while
providing a cleaner, healthier environment for this important
development stage. At yearling time we again weigh bulls, measure
testicles, evaluate for soundness, score for quality, and ultrasound
for carcass merit. The yearling bulls are vaccinated for
clostridials, respiratory, and de-wormed along with vitamin
and mineral vaccinations.
The Wilderness Development
Upon completion of gain test our spring bulls that have made the cut
are turned in the biggest and roughest pastures we have in an area
we call “The Wilderness.” We cool the bulls down from their gain
test, harden them up during the late spring and summer, while
monitoring the physical and structural changes that each bull goes
through. This Wilderness monitoring period is our most important
time frame because it separates the “men” from the “boys” by helping
us identify those bulls capable of fault-free use in any ranch
environment.
In late summer we select those bulls that have passed all previous
tests and are worthy of “The Cowman’s Kind” Bull Sale. Each step of
our selection and culling process particular attention is always
given to soundness of hoof and leg along with their ability to
withstand wear and tear in this rough and forage intensive
environment. The Mound Creek Bulls are nationally recognized as the
soundest structured, most fault-free bulls in the country.
Demanding The Most
The Sale Ring
Since the fall yearlings are brought off gain test just prior to the
Bull Sale they do not get the opportunity to go through our
“Wilderness” development program. However, the yearlings still have
to pass the same number of tests as all other sale bulls. To make
the final step to the sale ring all bulls, including the fall
yearlings, must pass their Breeding Soundness Evaluation which
includes actual semen test, physical examination, and testicle
measurement. Those that fail this BSE test are immediately culled
and sold for slaughter only. Also prior to the sale, all bulls are
Brucellosis tested, de-wormed, and vaccinated with Cattle Master 4
along with Vibrio/Lepto 5. During sale week all bull groups are
moved from their large pastures into the sale display area, screened
for a final time and sorted into the sale display pens. If they make
it to “The Cowman’s Kind” Bull Sale then you can rest assured they
have met our final approval.
Meeting the Challenge
There is not another set of bulls in the country that has to make as
many cuts as those that survive our standards. These ranch raised
bulls have more demanded of them and expected from them than any
other group of sale bulls in the country.
• First they are culled at weaning time if they don’t measure up or
weigh up off their mother.
• Second time bulls are culled when weighed on gain test and fail
quality control and structural soundness standards.
• Third time culls are made when weighed and measured off gain test
for bulls failing soundness, testicle, performance, ultrasound, and
quality measurements.
• Fourth level culls happen in early summer while in the middle of
“The Wilderness” treatment due to marginal hardiness, soundness, fleshing ability and post gain test performance.
• Fifth time culls are sorted out when “The Cowman’s Kind” sale
selections are made. Sale bulls are again monitored for soundness,
vigor, hardiness, and quality.
• Sixth time culls failed an intensive breeding soundness evaluation
with a last evaluation for overall quality.
• Finally, they are screened for the seventh time on the day we
actually place them in sale display pens. Final and absolute
evaluations are made for all traits of importance.

Seven times our bulls passed everything we could throw at
them.
Seven times they earned the right to stay.
Seven times they made the cut.
We have to be hard.
The next test is the toughest of all. It’s the real-world test of
surviving in the beef industry. The entire design of the Mound Creek
Bull Development Program is based upon winning that final test.
After all, our goal remains the same after all these years. It is
our job to raise the best beef bulls in the country. Period.
